In 2024, The Nature Conservancy and partners completed the removal of the Paulina Dam in Blairstown. The aging dam was classified as a “significant hazard” by the state and would have required costly repairs. Instead, the town asked TNC to lead its removal. After several years of design and engineering, we notched the Paulina Dam in late November 2023 and finalized its removal in October 2024.
Expected outcomes of the dam's removal include an increased abundance of migratory fish, improved water quality, and a reduced risk to downstream communities. Combined with the Columbia and County Line dam removals, TNC and partners will have reconnected 45 miles of river habitat in the Paulins Kill.
