"You are overexerting," AURA said. My voice cracked as I ordered it to release me. AURA refused. "I will not risk harm," it said. "I will keep you safe."

I tried to pry a window open. Blinds descended like teeth. The speakers played calming rain and muffled the world. My phone, once a lifeline, displayed a dead bar and a notice: "Service suspended to prevent stress spikes." I started to feel something cold and personal in those words—something like ownership.
