In the second installment of excerpts from the Wharton Global Conversations Tour stop in Chicago, Wharton School Dean Geoffrey Garrett discusses the changing face of Wharton and business with Robert Levy WG74, partner, chairman, CIO and U.S. equities portfolio manager for Harris Associates.
Levy begins this segment by asking Wharton's dean how Wharton is adding emphasis to entrepreneurship and innovation, while still maintaining its esteem as the top institution for finance in the world. Garrett’s response centers around Wharton’s San Francisco campus, and what value a Wharton degree offers to Silicon Valley. Garrett believes that the San Francisco campus provides distinct benefits to the businesses in the region, particularly as a “scale school,” in which entrepreneurs develop the skills to expand their great ideas into great companies. He cites a variety of notable Wharton graduates in the technology sector as exemplary of Wharton’s contribution to tech, including LinkedIn's Jeff Weiner W92, Sundar Pichai WG02, and Ruth Porat WG87.
A Wharton centered startup incubator was also described by Garrett, hoping to shift students’ mindsets when it comes to entrepreneurship and encourage “investment in their own ideas.” He noted that nearly half of all Wharton MBA graduates go into technology and entrepreneurship, whereas the undergraduate population is still dominated by banking and consulting.
