Describing the Basler Sunburst 7'2" Wooden Surfboard

This sleek, hollow-framed, wooden surfboard is infused with incredible history and is based on an original Lightning Bolt shape created by Jack Shipley and Gerry Lopez.

The bottom deck's sun rays are made from 120 year old salvaged redwood from Cabernet Sauvignon tanks by way of Alibi Interiors and redwood from the original planks of the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk that came to us by way of Mission Bell Manufacturing. The light colored rays are Alaskan yellow cedar offcuts from the Western Flyer boat restoration project. The "water" is made of fiddleback redwood salvaged from the Santa Cruz Mountains. The sun is salvaged manzanita.

The top deck also includes 120 year old wine tank redwood from Alibi Interiors along with Douglas fir from the original Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk, claro walnut from Mission Bell Manufacturing, and Douglas fir from the hull of the original Western Flyer, considered by many to be the most famous fishing boat in the world. John Steinbeck, Ed "Doc" Ricketts and crew chartered this 77-foot sardine boat into the Sea of Cortez in Baja California, Mexico in 1940. The following year, Steinbeck published his book, The Log from the Sea of Cortez about the adventure.

The vent and leash plug are made of Entropy Resins drippings created by Locus Surfboards while glassing for Ashley Lloyd Surfboards.

The translucent roots single fin is made of Douglas fir hull wood from the Western Flyer boat.

The rails are made of cork which is more resistant to dings. There are two sheets of Aerialite 4 ounce fiberglass on top and one on bottom. The epoxy is Entropy Super Sap 100 bio-resin which is up to 40% tree sap and is very strong and light.

As with all Ventana Surfboards, the interior is glassed and sealed, as well.

This board is hollow, lightweight and will ride as great as it looks. Given the uniqueness of each side, it's two art pieces in one.

Made in Santa Cruz, California by master artisan Martijn Stiphout.
