A small mistake in big terrain gave me a reality check I didn’t expect this season. The snowpack wasn’t the issue this day. My decision making was.

This winter had been going extremely well in the backcountry. We’d been finding great snow and making decisions that felt conservative at the time, gradually stepping into bigger terrain when the conditions appeared to allow it.
Over time that kind of season builds confidence, and sometimes it quietly shifts where your comfort zone sits.
Looking back, that shift played a role in what happened on this day.
The conditions themselves were solid, but the terrain carried real consequence. With a very deep layer of light powder sitting over a firmer base, the risk of snow immersion was real and even a small mistake/fall on a steep face had the potential to escalate quickly.
Early in the day I had some hesitation about our objective, but I didn’t anchor that feeling clearly enough with the group. Instead, the day continued to build momentum.
Later on, one small mistake put me in a situation that could have ended much worse.
This video isn’t about blaming conditions or pretending mistakes don’t happen in the mountains. It’s about recognising how confidence, familiarity and ego can subtly influence the decisions we make.
Sometimes the biggest lessons in the backcountry come from the days that don’t go exactly to plan.

❄️ Kiroro Ski Resort is known for some of the lightest, driest powder in Japan. Located west of Niseko near Otaru, it consistently receives massive storm totals thanks to cold Siberian systems crossing the Sea of Japan. The surrounding backcountry terrain offers everything from steep alpine faces to sheltered tree zones but requires proper avalanche knowledge and experience.
