Here, on the quiet edge of Greater Manchester, stands one of the region’s oldest surviving churches.
St Werburgh’s Old Church in Warburton may not look grand or imposing — but parts of it have stood here for nearly 900 years.
Timber. Stone. Brick.
Centuries layered into one small building.
Dedicated to an Anglo-Saxon saint from the 7th century, this church connects modern Manchester to a time before England even existed.
It has survived reformations, abandonment, changing architecture, and the slow erosion of time.
Many buildings like this disappeared.
This one did not.
In this episode of Manchester’s Last Brick, we explore the quiet endurance of St Werburgh’s — a place that does not shout for attention, but patiently waits to be noticed.

History doesn’t always stand in city centres.
Sometimes, it waits in silence.
