The Linden Tree – Corona Choir

Описание: The German Lied “Am Brunnen vor dem Tore” (translation by Neil Whitton) was originally composed by Franz Schubert for his famous song cycle “die Winterreise”. Its two protagonists, a forlorn wanderer and an old lime tree (linden tree), both tell stories of lost love, sadness and comfort. Lime trees, probably due to their heart shaped leaves, are considered “trees of love“ in germanic folklore. As such they know and keep the lovers' secrets. This old idea was enthusiastically revived in the romantic period with its theme of the relationship between man and nature. We use a simple arrangement by the 19th century composer Ludwig Erk of this famous piece.

Formed in March 2020 the virtual global “Corona Choir” made singing together possible at a time when humans' need for connection has never been greater. Singers in lockdown all over the world use the material put together by Neil Whitton and send recordings of their part to Julia Naji, who mixes the parts together creating the unique virtual choir sound. The Corona Choir brings together singers from a variety of backgrounds and experience, most who have never met in person yet have a desire to create music with others and feel connected with other humans in the special way only choir singers can understand.
