How Vision, Breathing & Stress Affect Muscle Tension

Lets consider how stress from visual stimulus & poor breathing affects muscle tension. Especially considering how many people leave the office & head to the gym feeling super tight.
When looking at screens for long periods, either on the phone or computer, we become tunnel visioned little we use peripherals & that together with the light from the screen & constant input, snowballs our stress/tension-movement dysfunctions. Vision affects your muscle tension as well as many other environmental stressors that are constantly going on around you. Places where there’s lots of people, noise, concrete, fast pace, non -stop work & tunnel vision.... means lots of stress!
But how is that affecting your muscular system? Are we stretching & releasing needlessly when our system is jacked up? Learning how to reset the body with some breathing & less stimulus can often help your muscles feel normal again with normal ranges & bring the body back to a safer place.

1️⃣ First I asked him to purposely look right at his phone, brightness up 📶, with music playing loud from it & test his hamstring & see where he’s at with range. Giving me little over 45 degrees passive range that would feel tight in most people (optimal is 90 degrees).

2️⃣ I now cover up his eyes & we have him do 5 deep breathes with a little cueing to reset the breathing pattern. Re-test the hamstring & we have an improvement without even touching the hamstrings.

3️⃣ 5 more breathes with flexed knees this time to eliminate back extension (as we breathe). Re-test the Hamstrings & we have 90 degrees and NO stretching or release work was done.

Moral of the story.... don’t just stretch, stretch & stretch. Don’t always look to release what’s tight. Your body’s system is probably really jacked-up from the environment you’re around. Reset it a bit. Decrease the distractions. Unwind & disrupt the undisputed.
