A song that was in Bob Dylan’s repertoire as early as 1961 and featured in both legs of the Rolling Thunder Review tours of 1975-6, is here given its final performance by him to date. Having entered into the oral tradition, it is regarded as a traditional song (Roud 541). The version sung here is as composed by Francis McPeake, of the well-known musical McPeake family of Belfast, in the early 1950s. He based it on the song The Braes of Balquhither composed by Scottish poet Robert Tannahill (1774-1810). Like Robbie Burns, Tannahill collected and adapted traditional songs, and "The Braes of Balquhither" may have been based on the traditional song "The Braes o' Bowhether".
In this sperformance, Dylan is accompanied by G. E. Smith on acoustic guitar.
