Julie Andrews: One To One
First aired: December 15, 1975
This televised musical special focuses on the charity works of World Vision International, a Christian humanitarian aid program founded in 1950 by Robert Pierce. Throughout the hour, president Stan Mooneyham and actor Art Linklater discuss the charity's history and actions and explain how viewers can sponsor impoverished children around the world for as little as $14 a month, briefly interviewing people and families who have done just that. The Korean Children's Choir opens the program with a song, joined by singer/actress Julie Andrews, figure skater Janet Lynn and Jim Henson's Muppets. Later, Andrews sings "Getting to Know You" from "The King and I" with the children, showing off how she has impressively memorized all thirty kids' names. Next, Andrews and the children sing a medley of songs including "Do-Re-Mi" from "The Sound of Music," "I'd Like to Teach the World to Sing," "Day by Day" from "Godspell," and "Make Your Own Kind of Music." Linklater chats with Andrews about her two adopted daughters, Amy and Joanna, and she sings "You and Me Against the World" over a montage of photos. Kermit the Frog appears and attempts to conduct some of his tone-deaf Muppet friends in a song, and Mooneyham chats with Brewster the farmer Muppet about his environmental efforts, after which the Muppets and the children sing "The Chain of Life" from "The Muppet Musicians of Brenem."
Kermit narrates a fairy tale about the Kingdom of Phumph, inhabited by only the king, the queen, the prince and their sole subject, Marvin. The four of them live a boring, sun-less experience, until one day a baby is left in a basket in their midst. The royals declare that the kingdom is too crowded to allow a fifth person, but Marvin offers to share his room and belongings with the child, at which point the king's crown magically transfers to Marvin's head and the sun shines on the kingdom for the very first time. Kermit then sings "If I Ruled the World" while sitting atop a globe. Lynn plays a game of "Follow the Leader" with the children on ice skates, and then performs a skating routine solo. Andrews sings "Somewhere" from "West Side Story" from a garden, and the children perform a medley of religious hymns, including "Jesus Loves the Little Children," "Amazing Grace" and "How Great Thou Art." Andrews and the choir close the program with "One to One."
