Footage of slippery laps from Rob and MX5 Supercup Legend Jack Harding during a day of Tuition for Rob at Anglesey Circuit on the 5th of November 2021
After a year of entirely dry track time, Rob and Mike headed to Anglesey to get prepared for the inevitable bad weather at the Race of Remembrance on the 10th-13th of November. The Anglesey weather gods didn't disappoint, and it duly horsed it down with rain all morning! Even though the sun came out in the afternoon, freezing temperatures ensured the track stayed greasy all day.
Fearing the conditions, and the uncertainty of running the new brakes and pads, Rob was quite tentative on the first runs and was unable to go any faster. Jack duly stepped up and took the car out for a couple of laps to find the optimal line and set a benchmark lap in the 1:57's (timed from footage after the lap). Jack was very impressed with the car, including the brakes and tyres which are a significant upgrade on the supercup specifications.
Jack and Rob then worked all day on getting the lines right and learning how to use the throttle on corner entry to find the limit of grip. In particular Rob needed to work on smoothness and patience. Jack noted that Rob was overdriving the car and needed to brake earlier and carry a little less speed at the apex. This enabled Rob to have better control of the car during turn in and at the apex and plant the throttle sooner on corner exit to carry more speed down the straights.
The result was Rob building confidence through the day and finally setting an unofficial time in the 1:58's in the afternoon, a whopping 5 second improvement on the morning's running. The most important thing, though, was that Rob had learned a great deal about where to position the car on the track in the wet ahead of the upcoming weekend of racing.
Rob is very much looking forward to getting some more track time with Jack next year in the continuing pursuit of achieving the full potential of the car :)
As always, thanks go to the Staff at Anglesey and Marshals, the photographer for the cover photo, and our track goers for a great day of action.
