This is what psychologists call depression inertia, and it’s a common barrier that keeps people trapped in the cycle of low mood and low motivation. In this video, we discuss a six-step CBT-based process to overcome depression inertia by breaking larger problems into manageable, achievable actions. You’ll learn how to identify the behavioral loops that maintain your symptoms and how to shift them using simple, strategic goals. We’ll explore the difference between knowing what to do and being able to do it—and why depression often hijacks that bridge. You’ll also learn about the concept of a “problem list,” how to pick targets for behavioral activation, and how to avoid common pitfalls like overreaching, minimizing your efforts, or giving up too soon. If you’ve been feeling overwhelmed, exhausted, or frustrated that you’re not making progress, this approach can help you start small, gain traction, and build real momentum in your recovery.
