(3/10/2026) After making my video showcasing my Pokemon LeafGreen cartridge for the Game Boy Advance, I bought LeafGreen on the Switch after it and FireRed were released on Pokemon's 30th anniversary day.
While I have been wanting to replay LeafGreen for quite some time, I also wanted to do a "no catching" playthrough challenge after seeing MandJTV doing it for Platinum, HeartGold, and Ultra Moon. The rules are as follows:
No throwing PokeBalls at any Pokemon. The only ones I can use are ones obtained without throwing PokeBalls (gift Pokemon, hatching eggs, reviving fossils, and purchasable Pokemon in game). No extra Pokemon can be caught even for HM purposes.
In game trades are allowed, but only if they involve Pokemon that are obtainable without throwing a PokeBall.
At the beginning of the game, I named my rival character "Rival" specifically calling back to my very first time playing LeafGreen in early 2008, not realizing my rival was supposed to have a name like Gary or Blue. Therefore, when I battled him, the game would display the text: "Rival Rival would like to battle!"
When choosing my starter Pokemon, I came to the conclusion that it's not possible to do this challenge if you choose Squirtle, because its evolutionary line cannot learn Cut. Plus, the only other obtainable Pokemon at the time you get Cut cannot learn it. This leaves the choice between Bulbasaur and Charmander, who both can learn Cut. Though Venusaur is my favorite and usually what I use for a Kanto playthrough, I decided to go with Charmander, specifically because Charizard can learn Fly once it's fully evolved. I named my Charmander Chester after Colonel Chester Phillips from Captain America: The First Avenger.
