This is a short video of ten minutes looking at the environment of Stonehenge during the Mesolithic period using LiDAR as an investigation tool.
The archaeologists have failed to comprehend that the position of Stonehenge in its environment tells the story and dates back to this most famous of ancient archaeological sites.
The Dry River Valley (that surrounds the site) is called 'Stonehenge Bottom' and was full of water during the Mesolithic Period as the many natural springs in Stonehenge Bottom would have flooded the area, up to the Old Car Park with up to 2,800 litres PER SECOND of water, which had no choice but flood the region creating a tributary that flooded south into the River Avon cutting out this unique landscape which can now be captured with LiDAR for the first time.
This was the start of Stonehenge (Phase I), which was the ditch surrounding the site, and the 56 Bluestones chalk pits known as Aubrey Holes. This construction was used as a bathing place, as the chalk ditch is unique as it is not a traditional ditch, but a series of individual 2m chalk holes with walls and seats.
This was used with the Bluestone chippings to heal ailments and diseases, as we see later in history with Roman baths.
This structure lasted for thousands of years and was replenished periodically with more Bluestones as they were whittled away from the large stone blocks until the Neolithic period, when the site underwent a change in function. This change was necessary because the water table in the area had dropped, and consequently, the shoreline of the River Avon within Stonehenge Bottom had also dropped. This drop in the water table dried up the ditch, and so it could no longer function as a bathing pool.
