They say you haven't truly experienced Vancouver until you’ve walked through a legendary "atmospheric river," and let me tell you, the vibes today were absolutely immaculate! While most people were staying dry indoors, Asif and I decided to embrace the "Raincouver" spirit head-on. We turned a dreary downpour into an epic Savoury Sunday Stream, proving that a little rain (okay, a lot of rain) is actually the perfect backdrop for exploring the city's incredible culinary scene.
Our wet and wild adventure kicked off at the newly opened Slo Coffee on Granville Street. There is something so poetic about watching the rain lash against the windows while holding a perfectly brewed cup of coffee; it was just the fuel we needed to start the trek. From there, we dove into the underground bustle of Granville Station, topping up our transit cards and riding the rails toward Stadium-Chinatown. The transit system here is such a lifeline when the weather turns, keeping you moving without getting soaked!
When we surfaced near Beatty Street, the craving for warm, comforting soul food was real, which led us straight to the doors of Marugame Udon. If you are looking for the ultimate rainy day cure, this is it. Asif warmed up with the Kitsune Udon featuring that massive, pillowy fried tofu, while I dove headfirst into the rich, savory beef udon. We also couldn't resist grabbing some sides, and let me tell you, that spicy chicken tempura is an absolute game-changer! The best part? We were blown away by how affordable it was—finding a spot where two people can feast for under $20 in downtown Vancouver feels like finding a unicorn.
Not ready to let the food coma win, we ventured over to the International Village Mall (classic Tinsel Town!) to hunt for some hidden gems. That exploration paid off when we stumbled upon Carnitas Don Jose. Tucked away inside the mall, this spot served up carnitas that felt incredibly authentic, paired with a spicy salsa that brought the heat we desperately needed.
To cap off this marathon of eating, we settled in at Little Bangkok Thai Kitchen 2. It was the perfect savory finish to the tour, offering high-quality dishes that warmed us from the inside out.
Don't let the rain scare you away—Vancouver’s food scene shines brightest when the weather is at its moodiest!
