Rapa Nui’s (Easter Island) towering moai have puzzled explorers and scientists for centuries, standing as silent guardians over one of the world’s most isolated islands. Dr. Lipo’s archaeological research over the past 20 years on Rapa Nui has revolutionized our understanding of how ancient Polynesian engineers moved these colossal stone giants across rugged terrain, revealing sophisticated techniques that overturn decades of speculation. His research explores the role these monuments played in Rapanui society, exposing a complex society where statues formed a key component of community sustainability. Dr. Lipo’s investigations also traces the deep ancestral roots of East Polynesian traditions, revealing the potential origins of the moai tradition in the broader Pacific world.

We are excited to offer this program both online and in-person. For those that can visit us on-site, doors open at 7:30 pm and the program begins at 8:00 pm. If the skies are clear, our domes will be open for you to view the night skies through Kopernik’s telescopes both before and after the program.
