In 1932, the Andrews Sisters, soon to gain fame as one of the biggest singing acts of the big band era, were a little-known touring act. During this time, they were touring in the east and made a stop at a Providence, RI radio station where they made a few home recordings. One has been in circulation for a number of years, but this one had not been circulated until I acquired it last year and posted a hasty restoration with some major technical deficiencies in the levels. I have now sold the record, but not before doing another transfer and improving a good deal on the restoration. It's far from perfect, but it's at least more audible and a bit more cleaned up. 4 mil stylus at 75 RPM.
As other have written, one can hear that the sisters' major influence at this time was the Boswell Sisters--most notably, their southern accents and African-American mannerisms.
This was purchased from the granddaughter of Dick Ballard, evidently a companion of the Sisters at the time. As seen in the photos of the record, it is dedicated to him.
Side A is Go On Satan, Go On. Side B is Hand Me Down My Walking Cane. Both were made popular by the Boswell Sisters.
The recording machine had some speed hiccups on the Walking Cane side, but the record is still remarkably preserved after 86+ years! The stylus used to transfer the record is probably a bit smaller than optimal, but it seems to have captured nearly all of the very minimal audio information present on the record--these were recorded in a very crude acoustical manner by shouting into the horn/speaker of a windup phonograph.
