Описание: Like many wind-pollinated trees, hickory (Carya, various species) is monoecious, producing apetalous male flowers very abundantly in drooping catkins well suited to casting the pollen grains into the wind. Meanwhile the female flowers are much larger and fewer, eventually developing into distinctive nuts. Here, a flowering shellbark hickory (C. laciniosa) branch in Tipp City , Miami County, Ohio, USA, is artificially encouraged to cast off pollen by someone walking softly and carrying a big stick. Speaking of distinctive nuts, musical accompaniment is courtesy of Michael and Dennis, both on electric guitar.
