On December 27, The Union League Legacy Foundation unveiled the latest painting in the collection - a portrait of abolitionist and ally of The Union League of Philadelphia during the Civil War, Lucretia Mott. A powerful orator, Mott dedicated her life to civil rights. Born to a Quaker family in Massachusetts, Mott’s family moved to Philadelphia when she was a teenager. She became a leader of the abolitionist movement and helped to organize the Philadelphia Female Anti-Slavery Society. During the Civil War, Mott worked with the League to establish Camp William Penn, the first training camp for the United States Colored Troops which was partly located on her family’s property. On July 6, 1863, Mott joined League members and other leading abolitionists, including Frederick Douglass, at a rally in Philadelphia to recruit soldiers to support the Union cause. This new portrait, by artist Joshua LaRock, will serve as a reminder of the important role that women played in the League and our nation’s history to form a more perfect Union.
Watch this episode to learn more about Mott, her work and the process of her portrait coming to fruition.
