Описание: BP station. Route 15, Mansfield, Pennsylvania. 7:40 PM. Wednesday night. November. A biker goes inside for coffee. Six minutes. When he comes back out, there's a shoe on his handlebar.

A pink and white sneaker. Size two. Tied to the grip with a pink hair tie. Inside the shoe — a hospital bracelet. Cut from a wrist with scissors. The name: Sophie Anne Kearns. Age seven. Admitted to the ER four days ago with a spiral fracture of the left forearm.

A spiral fracture. The kind that happens when a hand grips a child's arm and twists.

Sophie was in the back seat of a white SUV with tinted windows, twenty feet from the motorcycle. She'd rubbed a clear spot in the condensation to see out. She'd waited for the biker to go inside. She had six minutes. She took off her shoe, put the bracelet inside, tied it to his handlebar, and got back in the car. She chose his bike because of the vest. She put the bracelet in the shoe because he checks her pockets but he doesn't check her shoes.

Otis "Sheave" Pruett — crane operator, Treasurer of the High Iron MC — found the shoe. Read the bracelet. Called 911. Five motorcycles formed a triangle around a white SUV that wasn't going anywhere.
