Your RIBS are tight.
Tight shoulders? Got a "catch" somewhere in the upper back? Trouble with bringing your arms overhead?
Underneath the bigger muscles, some of that restriction may be coming from your ribcage.
The "intercostals" are the muscles between your ribs, allowing your chest to inflate as they stretch, then deflating your chest as you push the air out of your lungs.
If you haven't trained in a way that aggressively challenges your breathing, your mobility -- especially around the shoulders -- is probably much more limited than it needs to be.
In this video, I'm demonstrating ways to direct full breaths into the upper chest, by controlling the core and bracing the low ribs in place. There are a few different arm positions to try, and I've got an elastic band to help out.
The hard thing about demonstrating this is that you need to spend time in different positions and FEEL how your breath can shift and loosen the layers of muscle laid over your ribs.
