This week, we’re working on one of the essential Bossa Nova standards — One Note Samba by Antônio Carlos Jobim. This tune is full of clever twists: the form keeps you on your toes, the harmony moves in unexpected ways,and the groove challenges you to think about bass playing differently than in a straight-ahead swing context. It’s a song that requires you to balance the rhythmic considerations of Bossa Nova with the harmonic and melodic vocabulary of jazz, making it a fantastic learning ground for any bassist. In this tutorial, we’ll dig into multiple approaches for playing Bossa Nova bass lines, exploring different rhythmic feels, outlining the harmony clearly, and weaving in ideas that stay true to both Latin Jazz aesthetics and jazz tradition.
