Urban Excellence: Lessons from the World’s Most Innovative Cities

The panel explored global perspectives on “urban excellence,” with insights from architects, urban developers, and government advisors.

Moderated by Gaurav Sharma, the discussion opened with a key question: how should cities define urban excellence? The speakers agreed that it's no longer about rapid expansion or iconic skylines—it’s about harmony, sustainability, and designing for people.

Daniel Liu emphasized Singapore’s long-term planning approach, where urban development is embedded within broader social and economic goals. He noted that excellence is context-specific and must be defined locally.

Emre Arolat advocated for a balance between economy, equity, and ecology—citing global examples like Paris and Amsterdam that use metrics and stories to shape humane, integrated urban systems.

Greg Bargull stressed the importance of social infrastructure—parks, gathering spaces, and walkability—as foundational elements of livable communities.

Asma Aljassmi highlighted Abu Dhabi’s intentional planning strategy, emphasizing inclusivity, sustainability, and the role of public-private partnerships in fostering innovation. She cited Aldar’s projects and recycling initiatives as examples of ecosystem-wide collaboration.

The panelists also reflected on balancing luxury and affordability in housing, the role of technology, and how Abu Dhabi offers lessons in leadership, planning frameworks, and sustainability benchmarks. Caution was urged around overreliance on smart technology without thoughtful design.
In closing, the group agreed that excellence requires integration across sectors, long-term thinking, and a deep respect for local context.
