This video has been a long time coming, covering the history of Portland’s zoo from its humble beginnings in 1888 up until 1925 when it moved to the Japanese Garden in Washington Park. And while the zoo has existed in four different places it has always remained in the Washington Park area (despite efforts to move it elsewhere).
In this video I discuss the origins of the zoo, which connects back to a small downtown drug store, and it’s early years of development from a few animals in a few circus cages to finally moving to a semi-modern site in 1925. I also visit all the spots related to the zoo including where the first three zoos were, the site of the bear pit as well as what was called the owl castle.
