Birds have been a big part of our farm since the very beginning, but we now mainly keep ducks (which we lovingly call “slug patrol”) because they are so helpful when it comes to keeping slugs, snails, and earwigs under control in the field. Plus, they are hysterical and bring such fun energy to the farm.
This season we’re trialing a handful of different duck breeds, including Cayugas, Muscovys, and Indian Runners, to see which ones are the very best sluggers. Our newest ducklings came from Metzer Farms (link below), a family-owned hatchery that has the largest variety of duck breeds in the United States.
