So over the last few years I've seen a lot of people cleaning and 'restoring' their aluminium Trangia camping stoves with a variety of methods including dish scourers, steel wool, pot scourers, sandpaper, brass brushes, rubbing sand into it and more.
Aluminium is an incredibly soft metal and as such is damaged very easily by most cleaning materials which you would normally be perfectly fine to use on ceramic or steel.
The method I have used in the video uses Autosol metal polish which is designed specifically for use on aluminium and chrome, but also works incredibly well on a variety of other metals, not only does it remove oxidisation and rust, but also polishes and adds protection. One of the usual concerns when polishing and cleaning utensils which are used to prepare or cook food is the risk of of harmful toxins being ingested, but fortunately that isn't an issue with Autosol, here is an extract from their website:
"Autosol Metal Polish is certified by NSF International, a global public health and safety organization, and has been declared safe for use around food processing areas. This product is non-toxic and ammonia free, making it ideal for household, automotive or industrial use."
Naturally it is always worthwhile giving your pots and pans a good soapy clean and rinse after cleaning them with anything, always ensure you do this before using them for cooking (the same goes for when you purchase a brand new Trangia).
Many of you may ask the reason for cleaning and polishing using this method, the answer is simple - after frequent use your Trangia will develop small abrasions and inconsistencies on the surface of the pans and equipments, these small abrasions will hold onto food and dirt and make cleaning difficult, and will also make it far more likely for burning and foodstuff to stick to the bottom of your pans when cooking, the smoother and more polished the surface the less likely this is to happen.
This restoration was carried out in such a way to not remove all character from the equipment and to leave dents and character scratches intact. If you needed to remove deep scratches you will need to work through various grades of sandpaper from coarse to fine and then follow up with polishing afterwards, this should ONLY be done if the scratch is detrimental to use as sandpaper will quickly and easily remove aluminium material from your Trangia, as such should only be used when absolutely necessary.
Remember, when cooking with your Trangia, always use plastic or wooden utensils to prevent scratching your pots and pans.
-ADDITIONAL INFO-
Please only use this method on bare aluminium, DO NOT use this method on non-stick surfaces or to clean the surface of the red Trangia equipment or other special surfaces.
If you have any questions, please drop them in the comments :)
