Churches select elders and want to do so biblically...so they turn to the pastorals (1 Timothy 3 and Titus 1) to the checklists of who qualifies. Often various criteria get left out or not considered and what results is the wrong people in the wrong positions.
In addition to that the role of elder is often viewed of as supreme authority in positional authority rather than as servant leader. The way to the top is the way to the bottom in Jesus' economy!
So let's look at what the actual qualifications are in the New Testament (including 1 Peter 5) and talk about how these things play out in real churches. Then let's talk about how we can try to be more biblical and why that is important in the churches!
