You join me today in Minions, the highest village in Cornwall, sitting at 299 metres above sea level.
Surrounded by engine houses, old tramways, dressing floors and trial pits, this area was once one of the densest mining districts in Cornwall. Tin and copper were worked extensively across the moor, and the landscape still bears the marks of that industrial past.
From the Liskeard and Caradon Railway to collapsed stopes and capped shafts, the geology here explains exactly why so much effort went into building railways and engine houses so high on the moor.
I’ve been the Down-to-Earth Geologist.
