The Union Canal was once a crucial link between eastern and western Pennsylvania — and today, its forgotten remnants still hide in plain sight.
In this video, I explore the history and surviving remains of the Union Canal in Pennsylvania, focusing on the Reading area, Berks County, and Lebanon County, and culminating at the Union Canal Tunnel, the oldest existing transportation tunnel in the United States.
Built during the early American canal era, the Union Canal was envisioned as the “Golden Link” connecting Philadelphia with the interior of Pennsylvania via the Schuylkill and Susquehanna Rivers. Although construction began as early as the 1790s, delays, engineering challenges, and later competition from railroads ultimately led to the canal’s early demise.
We’ll dive into:
The origins of canal transportation in the United States
Why canals were critical before the rise of railroads
The rise and fall of the Union Canal
How anthracite coal fueled Pennsylvania’s canal boom
Why the canal struggled financially and technically
And how floods, railroads, and poor early design choices sealed its fate
After exploring the history, I visit what remains today:
Canal beds, towpaths, and lock ruins along the Tulpehocken Creek
Preserved locks and aqueduct sites
The Union Canal Trail
And finally, the Union Canal Tunnel in Lebanon, PA, completed in 1827 and still standing more than 200 years later
The tunnel is a National Historic Landmark and a National Historic Civil Engineering Landmark, yet remains one of Pennsylvania’s most overlooked historic sites.
If you’re interested in Pennsylvania history, abandoned and forgotten infrastructure, historic canals, or railroad and transportation history, this video offers a deep dive into a fascinating — and often overlooked — chapter of early American engineering.
