Making a Quick and Easy Regency Petticoat (Yes, You *Can* Sew This!)

Today I am showing that with two meters of fabric, four hours, and a dream, you too can make a very simple and versatile petticoat! I decided to embark on a new Regency impulse project, but then recalled that my last project, a re-creation of the Pemberley dress from Pride and Prejudice (2005), looked a bit more Alice in Wonderland than Elizabet Bennet. The offender? THE PETTICOAT!

I typically always want more volume in my skirts - I'm a Victorian at heart, not a Regency woman - but this is the situation where a mis-matching petticoat really shows and affects the columnar, simpler silhouettes of the 1790s-1800s. Therefore, I wanted to give a Regency a proper shot and make a proper(ish) petticoat. I used the same pattern as for my outer skirt, which was graded up from a book where a pattern was taken from an extant dress, but made it narrower than the outer skirt. The petticoat is made of three pattern pieces: two trapezoids and one rectangle, cut on the double with the CF on the fold. I used just about two meters of plain cotton sheeting. The top is pleated to fit and bound, where a drawstring can be fed through. Straps are added to keep that empire waist in place, and the hem is finished with a bit of lace to avoid any handsewing, and voila! A quick but very cute petticoat. If I fix the straps to be a bit nicer, it could even work as a summer skirt!
