There are small muscles that control the arch of our foot. We need them to be able to both contract and relax to shock absorb and help us push off of our foot when we're stepping, running, climbing, etc.
Because we all wear shoes, the soles of the shoes do some of this work for us, giving these muscles a vacation. It is crucial to make sure that these muscles know how to do their job so we don't have to depend on insoles, arch support, or built up shoes instead!
This is a great exercise for anybody with foot pain, knee pain, hip, or back pain because our feet are the things that connect us to the earth; therefore, if they don't have the ability to cushion us and create force, the rest of our joints have to pick up the slack and do the work. It's all a chain reaction!
