I was transformed during the Lenten season years ago when I began the spiritual practice of giving up something bad for Lent. That’s right. I don’t give up the good stuff like coffee, chocolate, or tequila to commune more deeply with God during Lent!

Instead, I strive to give up something that diminishes life.

This year, I want to invite you to give up something I believe is not life-giving for Trinity.

Let’s give up empty pews in our sanctuary every Sunday morning!

Growing up, there was a phrase: “It’s a sin and a shame.” And I’ll tell you what feels like a sin and a shame to me — walking into our beautiful sanctuary and seeing empty pews. Because when I see an empty pew, I don’t just see wood and fabric. I imagine someone carrying felt needs — despair, discouragement, pain, heartache, suffering — someone who would benefit from an encounter with the Divine in a community like ours.

This Sunday, I’ll be preaching a message titled Believe in Your Divine Partnership. We will explore the power of what it means to partner with God in accomplishing the sacred work of being the Church — not someday, but right now. Not alone, but together.

In that spirit, I’m challenging you this Lenten season: bring someone with you. A family member. A friend. A colleague. Extend the invitation. You never know how God might use your courage to change someone’s life — including your own.

Please reflect on the scripture as you prepare your heart for Sunday morning’s worship experience.

1 Corinthians 3:6-9

Come expecting. Come believing. And don’t come alone.
