We are all aware of breathing exercises or pranayama that help build and maintain immunity. However, along with pranayama, there are many types of asanas that have a significant impact on our immune system. With our current lifestyles and changing global weather, staying strong and protecting our bodies from succumbing to the flu, common cold, asthma attacks are becoming increasingly important.
Let’s look at the 4 categories of asanas that you should do regularly to strengthen and maintain good immunity.
1. Surya Namaskar or any other Vinyasa based asanas
2. Chest opening Asanas
3. Abdominal crunches and twists
4. Inversions
The above categories of asanas primarily work on
1. Improving blood circulation and removing toxins.
2. Improving respiration and cardiovascular health.
3. improving lymphatic drainage.
1. Let's begin with Surya Namaskar:
In this video, I’ll be demonstrating one round of Classical Surya Namaskar.
Surya Namaskar works on on blood circulation, chest opening, abdominal crunches and improved breathing in various asanas within one sequence.
2. We find most parts of the lymphatic system in the neck, arm pits, and chest region. Hence chest openings are a natural choice to improve lymphatic drainage. Also, these asanas help improve breathing, another phenomenon that improves immune response. Let’s look at two popular chest opening practices.
Ustrasana and Danurasana.
3. Moving to our 3rd category, the abdominal crunches and twists - The crunch and twists affecting the abdominal cavity and groin areas assist in improved lymphatic drainage in this region. Ardha matsyendra and Jatara Prarthana
4. Inversions - asanas like Sarvangasana (shoulder stand), Sirshasana (headstand), and other inversions have a strong simulating impact on lymphatic drainage. Sarvangasana and Sirshasana.
