“Hello, my name is Chelsea, I am excited to inform the SYR community that I am working as a Deaf Weight Wise Counselor with the National Center for Deaf Health Research to lead and facilitate DWW groups with the SYR Deaf community. The NCDHR and WMI are working together to provide DWW to our communities, these DWW groups are for anyone residing in the Syracuse or Central NY region. If WMI provides services to your area, you can participate in DWW. Though WMI is a partner, they will not know who is in group or what happens in the DWW groups, DWW groups are confidential.
Deaf Weight Wise is a 16-week healthy lifestyle intervention for Deaf ASL users. DWW groups will meet
for 2 hours each week for 4 months to learn tools to adapt to a healthier lifestyle. You will learn about
healthy living, healthy food choices, cooking, and fun ways to be physically active. DWW will also discuss
tools for managing stress and developing support systems. In past DWW groups, some participants have been able to reduce cholesterol levels, Blood pressure, weight loss, reduction in BMI, and become more active, as well as maintain a healthier lifestyle after the group sessions have ended. DWW is flexible and can be adapted to each individual's own personal goals, example: some don't need to lose weight but want to exercise more and eat healthier, some need to lose weight/exercise more/eat healthier, etc.
The 2-hour weekly meetings will be hosted remotely on Zoom, you can join our group from anywhere. DWW zoom groups are small groups of approximately five to eight people and group confidentiality rules will be discussed after the screening appointment and during the first session with your group.
The DWW program is free, if you enroll, you will be asked to meet with someone from the NCDHR DWW team 3 times over 18 months, to do health interviews and take an ASL health survey. You will be paid for these appointments. All DWW appointments with the research team will be hosted remotely by VP or Zoom too, no need to worry about driving or meeting in person.
If you have any questions, want to learn more, or schedule your screening appointment, contact the NCDHR DWW team.” (Signing ends)
