The United States on Wednesday seized a Russian-flagged oil tanker in the North Atlantic after a weeks-long pursuit as part of its efforts to enforce sanctions and block Venezuelan and other sanctioned oil exports, U.S. officials said. The vessel, formerly known as Bella-1 and renamed Marinera, was boarded under a U.S. federal court warrant in international waters, and U.S. European Command confirmed the operation, which comes amid a broader campaign against a so-called “shadow fleet” involved in sanctions evasion. Moscow reacted angrily, with Russia’s transport ministry calling the move a violation of international maritime law and asserting that “no state has the right to use force against vessels duly registered under the jurisdiction of other states,” citing the 1982 U.N. Convention on the Law of the Sea. Russian lawmakers went further, condemning the seizure as “outright piracy” and demanding humane treatment and swift return of the Russian crew. The incident highlights mounting geopolitical tensions over sanctions, freedom of navigation, and enforcement actions on the high seas.
