India and Bangladesh have formally initiated talks to renew the Ganges Water Sharing Treaty, which is set to expire in December 2026 after completing 30 years. As part of the renewal process, joint teams from both countries have begun periodic measurements of water levels in the Ganga River and the Padma River.
Signed in 1996, the treaty marked a major milestone in bilateral cooperation and aimed at equitable sharing of dry-season flows, particularly after the construction of the Farakka Barrage by India in 1975. The agreement also strengthened institutional cooperation through the Indo-Bangladesh Joint River Commission.
With Bangladesh’s heavy dependence on seasonal river flows and rising political sensitivities, the outcome of the renewal talks will be critical for regional water security, diplomacy, and India’s Neighbourhood First policy.
