Driving Hardknott Pass (East to West) – A Journey Through Time and Mountains
Setting off from the eastern side near Eskdale, the ascent up Hardknott Pass is one of the most dramatic drives in the Lake District. As you climb the narrow, twisting single-track road, gradients reach an extreme 30%, making it one of the steepest roads in England. Hairpin bends hug rugged fells, and at every turn, vast views of the valley unfold beneath you.
Halfway to the summit, the landscape opens to reveal the Roman Fort of Hardknott, also known as Mediobogdum. Built in the 2nd century AD, this remote outpost once housed Roman soldiers tasked with controlling movement through the mountains. Today, its stone foundations and gatehouses remain visible, with information boards explaining its history. From the fort, there are breathtaking panoramas across Eskdale and out toward the Irish Sea—well worth a short stop if traffic allows.
Continuing westward, the road crests at around 393 metres above sea level before descending sharply into Eskdale. The western slope is just as challenging as the climb—tight corners, uneven surfaces, and little room for oncoming vehicles demand full concentration. But the reward is a thrilling drive surrounded by dramatic peaks, ancient history, and a sense of adventure you’ll remember long after the journey ends.#djiair3s
