Keswick to Threlkeld Railway Walk | Lake District Walk | History & Scenic Trail
Join us on a stunning journey along the Keswick to Threlkeld Railway Path, a beautiful traffic-free trail following the route of the old Cockermouth, Keswick & Penrith Railway. This easy, family-friendly walk offers gentle terrain, breathtaking views of the River Greta, and iconic landmarks such as the restored railway bridges and the dramatic Greta Gorge.
Brief History of the Railway
The line originally opened in 1865, connecting rural communities across Cumbria with Penrith and the West Coast Main Line. It carried both passengers and freight—including the famous Threlkeld granite—through the heart of the Lake District. After nearly a century of operation, the line closed in 1972, and its disused trackbed eventually evolved into the scenic walking and cycling path we enjoy today.
Storm Desmond in 2015 severely damaged several bridges and sections of the route, but a major restoration project brought the path back to life, fully reopening in 2020. Today, it’s a perfect blend of natural beauty and preserved railway heritage.
