Varnam is the central piece of a Bharatanatyam repertoire. This varnam speaks from the perspective of a Nayika who is longing to see Shiva.
She says, "Adi shivane kanave aase kondenadi" - that Shiva who is the Adi purusha, the root of all creation, I long to see him.
The one who dances in thillai ambalam where there is honesty and truth,
the one who is ardhanareshwara, who has no birth or death, the one who is eternal, that paranjyoti, that Shiva I want to see.
When the dusk falls, I lose my mind and the arrows of love pierces me, I hear the Cuckoo calling my name, my whole body yearns to be with him, am i going crazy?
Why should i fear anyone talking about me, O sakhi, it is no longer a secret.
I search for him endlessly, singing about him all the time, he comes in my dreams and says he will never leave me for a second, is this all true? O sakhi, what do i do? my whole body is withering away, i cant seem to find a solution for this suffering, he comes in my dreams but not in reality, I wish to be with him forever, how can I ever forget Him.
