The second of my Twisted Fairytales series. Based on the original tale by the Brothers Grimm, this is a what-if, where Rapunzel's prince had not survived his fall from the tower (I mean, it really was quite the fall! :o )
To honor the original tale, I incorporated the most famous line within the song lyrics.

Lyrics:
In a garden black as sorrow’s well
Where thorns did bite and ivy fell
A couple wept ’neath moon’s cold glow
For fruit forbidden, sweet and low
They plucked the bloom, their babe to pay
And from the dark, the witch did say -
“Bound by bloom and blood divine,
The child is yours, but she is mine”
Oh, Rapunzel
So sweet and fair
With silver eyes and golden hair
So sang the witch and took her high
Where no man’s voice could reach the sky
No door, no stair, no soul below
Only her braided tresses’ glow
“Rapunzel!
Rapunzel!
Let down your hair,
That I may climb thy golden stair!”
The days bled pale, the seasons turned,
The girl grew still, her heart unlearned
She sang to stars she’d never known
A song of cage and marrow-bone
Her voice escaped through cloud and flame
And drew a prince who spoke her name
He called to her through darkened air
And love took root in her despair
Oh, Rapunzel
So sweet and fair
With silver eyes and golden hair
He climbed her tower, hand to sky
To steal a kiss and never die
No door, no stair, yet still he’d go
Up to her heart where wild winds blow
“Rapunzel!
Rapunzel!
Let down your hair,
That I may climb thy golden stair!”
The witch returned, her eyes afire
And cast them both in grief and ire
She tore his sight, she cut the chain
And bound the night to endless pain
“Rapunzel, child of sin and thread,
Your voice shall haunt
Your love lies dead!”
From tower’s edge the witch was thrown
Her screams were lost to wind and stone
The maiden fled through thorns and rain
No home to seek, no past to name
Her tears fell red, her spirit wild
And death took pity on the child
Oh, Rapunzel
So sweet and fair
With silver eyes and golden hair
Sing no more your song of pain
The tower falls, the witch is slain
Yet in the dark, when winds do creep
Her golden ghost still sings to sleep
Rapunzel
Rapunzel
Let down your hair
Let down your hair…
