The sales model you choose shapes everything: income, schedule, and whether your farm survives year one.
Farmer's markets, CSAs, restaurants, grocery stores, wholesale, online stores — farming has more business model options than most industries. Choose wrong? You'll spend time in ways you hate while not making enough money.
Population density matters most. 500 shoppers vs. 2,500 shoppers at a market = same effort, 5X opportunity. Rural? You'll need to drive to urban centers. Where are the 100K+ population centers within 200 miles?
Experience determines model fit. Beginner-friendly (garage sale style): farmers markets, farm stands, online stores. Advanced (consistency required): restaurants, CSAs, grocery stores. Don't jump into models requiring experience you don't have.
Pricing varies dramatically by location. Rural tomatoes: $1/pound. Urban: $3.50-4/pound. Same product, different markets. Research matters.
Unfair advantages: Work at big company (CSA to coworkers), church community (built-in customers), high-traffic road (farm stand), wealthy neighborhood nearby, restaurant industry experience. Everyone has something unique to leverage.
