This is my foundational drill for anyone looking to start their backbends, as we want to make sure that the midback is engaging, and we want to condition it to extend. This is also a great drill for anyone who sits at a desk.
The big piece here is position; by locking my elbows at eye level, and lifting from there, it forces more midback action and moves the lever away from the low back. If your low back does grip here, focus on engaging your abs and tucking your pelvis as you lift your sternum to the ceiling.
