In this video, I break down how shows like The Summer I Turned Pretty and stories like The Life List use emotional cheating, “the best friend you don’t have to worry about,” and off-screen partners to make betrayal feel less real—and more acceptable. When the person being cheated on is invisible, the audience is pushed to root for relationships that are built on hurt with zero consequences.

We’ll talk about why this trope is so common, why it’s harmful, and how some stories actually handle cheating right by showing real emotional fallout and accountability—like 13 Going on 30, Jane the Virgin, Bridget Jones’s Diary, and Crazy, Stupid, Love.
