A Quaint Village in the Mountain Regions of Arganil with a Tiny Beach!

Описание: "Avo", which means "Grandmother", is a small village in the hill valley areas of central Portugal in the municipality of Arganil, close to the city of Oliveira do Hospital.
On the hill overlooking the village, are the ruins of a fortification castle. The area was populated in the Iron age by the Castro Culture and much later taken over by the Romans. It was an important connecting point along the Roman road network that connected other important areas, including the Roman town of Conimbriga. Around 412 the region was settled by the Alans, and then a few hundred years later, around 716 it was taken over by the Muslims. By the 11th century it was in the possession of Count Sesnando Davides of Coimbra and later transferred to the Bishop of Coimbra. The castle was built around the 12th century.
We enjoyed walking around on a Sunday early evening and seeing the little sandy, river beach area right in the center of the village, near the bridge, where people were enjoying the sunshine, swimming and sunbathing.
There are a few restaurants and cafes around the area, as well as hiking trails, making it a quaint, picturesque village to spend time exploring or just relaxing.
