This one as many of you may remember is from the lot video of 13 drives I got sold as-is in untested condition. This one ended up having all bad sectors and the probable cause of this is very likely a bad head or heads inside the drive, and patterns in a utility called Victoria show this pattern. A highly unreliable model from Western Digital that is known to have issues such as bad media and heads. The LC models tend to be more reliable. The LB models are much harder to find and especially in working condition, Western Digital even recalled the drives at one point.
The design and sound of this drive is very nice and it sounds great. The bearings on this one are pretty much perfect and it may not be audible in the video since the video is boosted for hearing and demonstration purposes. In person, this drive is near silent and has perfect spindle bearings. It likely was not used much at all. Since the LB drives have no real intelligent S.M.A.R.T (but they do have a very basic S.M.A.R.T), the hours and power-on count of the drive show up as unknown. I assume it has very low hours and failed pretty quickly for the bearings to sound as nice as they do. A clean looking drive, with a beautiful pink stripe across the top. This drive is in wonderful external condition, it is a shame it does not work properly and is unable to store any data due to what appears to be bad heads. At least it makes a nice decoration.
The Caviar 35100 only came in 00LB or 00LC variants. There are many differences between the 00LC and 00LB drives. This one is clearly a 00LB drive as shown at the end of the model number. Density is a difference between the LB and LC models. Most LCs are a platter or head short of the LB model. The seektest is different. LC drives also use a faster interface. LA drives of any model are 5200RPM however the LB and LC drives are 5400RPM. Credit:@XL-Tech
The LB is a "true" 35100 in terms of internal design and sound. PCBs are not compatible with each other and may result in damage to the drive preamp or heads if swapped between and LC and LB drive. 35100-00LC is a 36400 missing the top head. The Physical difference between the LB and LC include: Different arms, locking tabs, platter density, media type, PCBs, head amps, magnet assemblies, spindle cap, and seektest. Credit:@windisk1112
