What looks like another cursed tombstone of a drive. Somewhat reminds me of the Samsung Apollo's, but has a completely different character to it. It has a wonderful design and construction, with the PCB being my favorite part. NEC made these well laid out in terms of the design. Unfortunately, these NECs seem to be fragile units, but being that this is a mid 90s model, they seem to hold up quite a bit better to abuse. It appears the label is supposed to be white, as the seal on the side of the drive is, but the label on top is heavily yellowed. The pictures show it quite well if you are interested in viewing those. What is most shocking to me is the fact this drive is in perfect health, no bad sectors at all. I had to import this one all the way from Canada. I am so glad I finally found an NEC drive at all, as I have been looking for one for months with no luck at reasonable prices. The few that are for sale, at least in the U.S., are well around one hundred dollars or more.
These are quality drives. The PCB is made in Japan, but the drive is assembled in the Philippines. Notice the typos that NEC made on this one, where it says "Assembled in Philippnes", where it is supposed to be spelled Philippines. Another strange typo is the warning that says "Removal of top cover. Seals voids warranty", not sure why they put a period between there. This model as far as I could conclude is very rare and it is unusual to see the typos, but perhaps there were some translation issues. A pleasant drive to use, and the spindle sound has a unique tone to it, and an odd RPM.
I want to give a special thanks to @bigbluebananabread for doing research on this unit and encouraging me to pick up my first NEC! The amount of confusion that NEC model numbers cause is incredible for how simple the model number seems. The D3724 & D3726 came out at the same time, which is after the D3725 and D3723 were released. Apparently the D3724 came AFTER the D3725...why NEC....just why. I'm blown away by how you can make a simple model number a mix match of confusion with release dates and models announced that seem contradictory to what is logical. I guess NEC really was having a blast trying to confuse customers into understanding their madness!
