Note: the C# 1 on the font is sharp, almost sounding like the D. This results in undesired octaves in m. 9.
Providing notes for modern music almost seems like an apology, to some it's insulting. To claim the listener "doesn't get it" reeks of elitism. There is either a connection with the listener or there isn't. One likes a piece of music, or does not. It is my intention and sincere hope with all I write that you will be satisfied.
I began with modern music, having studied in a new music center, primarily with abstract expressionist Morton Feldman. Though I always knew my approach would be more eclectic, I found these new tools useful as I did 18th century counterpoint, the sonata dialectic and more.
Special about Feldman is that he did not teach how to compose, he taught how to think about what you're doing.
I - a mosaic (variations)
II - (4:58) Feldman spoke of a painting as much as music, often comparing the goals and problems to be solved by both painters and composers. This section is simply a fond impression of Pollock's work.
III- (6:30) Bartok was one of the composers Feldman pounded into my brain as I left the Romantic period behind, kicking and screaming. It is not a strict Bartok homage; it is the result of my own style infused with Bartok's method.
I like good modern music.
I don't like to stand still. When you do, you fall behind.
Stravinsky said so.
So did Einstein.
