How To Rap: Finding your Rap Style
Today I’m going to give a slight overview into how you can find your rap style and improve it. Honestly, this is a pretty broad topic and there are a massive number of things you can do to refine your style, but these are the three things I think will have the most impact, especially for those just starting out.
Study artists you like
One of the best ways to understand yourself as an artist is to listen to other artists. Plain and simple. Find those things that you admire about them, and see what you can do to emulate their skills. This is not to say that you should copy them and try to recreate their exact style, but pay attention to what they’ve done and see what you can incorporate into your own style.
Try new approaches
This has two meanings built into it. One is that you should try different styles, so for example if you’re typically very lyrical, at least try an upbeat catchy track once or twice. It may seem contradictory to the first piece of advice, but if you only engage with the styles that you’re most comfortable with you may miss opportunities for growth or find that you really like creating something that you don’t actually like from other artists.
In addition, this also means try new approaches in your writing and delivery. Maybe you usually write your verses first, maybe try writing a chorus first. It’s the same idea as mentioned before, the more you try, the more opportunities you have to find what works and doesn’t work for you.
To breathe life into this idea, I used to think that writing all in one session was a benefit to me. I’d sit down and wouldn’t get back up until I was sure that each part of a verse was perfect. Well, one time I was stuck on a weird schedule and had to come back and edit and work through a single verse over several sessions. I thought it was going to be disjointed, because my mindset was different each time. It actually ended up being one of the cleanest verses I’d written as the idea had a chance to be shaken around, trimmed, and condensed. Now I do this regularly, and it’s a style I would have never tried had I not been forced to.
Listen to your audience
This piece of advice has to be taken with a broad picture in mind because feedback can vary so much from person to person and it’s easy to get discouraged. When I say listen to your audience, I don’t mean change everything they say, every time and use that as the sole determinant in your style. What I do mean is that you should pay attention to the kinds of things people do and don’t like.
In my experience, the style that gets the biggest emotional reactions is the one that’s going to be a winner for you. It doesn’t mean you need to stick with this all the time, but if you have people saying it really impact them because of where they are in their life, or they were able to bang to this, or whatever else that’s a style that’s working for you. When people connect with your music there’s not many feelings that are better than that. Use your audience as a barometer to the power of your current style.
