Welcome to Poetry Changes Lives, my daily book combining poetry, history, and a thought for the day.
On this day in 1832, the French painter Édouard Manet was born in Paris. A pivotal figure in modern art, Manet stands at the turning point between Realism and Impressionism, influencing generations of painters who followed.
Born into a comfortable Parisian family, Manet was able to travel widely and study the Old Masters he admired. His work often paraphrased earlier compositions: Le Déjeuner sur l’Herbe echoes a drawing by Raphael, while Olympia recalls Goya’s Naked Maja. His admiration extended especially to Frans Hals, Velázquez, and Goya.
Manet moved easily among the artistic and literary elite of Paris, counting among his friends painters such as Degas, Monet, Pissarro, Cézanne, and Renoir, and writers including Émile Zola, Stéphane Mallarmé, and Charles Baudelaire. Yet despite this brilliance and companionship, his personal life was troubled. He died at the age of 51, from complications related to syphilis.
Today’s poem is by Christopher Marlowe. Its sensuous pastoral vision springs naturally to mind when contemplating Manet’s Le Déjeuner sur l’Herbe—a celebration of beauty, desire, and an imagined escape into pleasure.
