Poland To Kolhapur || Valivade Camp || Homeland 1943 to 1948 :The wold war II started and it was a really very hard time for Polish people.Thousands of people became homless and thousands of people, families and children were sent to Labour Camps. Around the later half of World war II, At that time The Red cross worker Kira Banasinska, the wife of Polish Counslate general in Mumbai , Kira managed to bring the Polish people into India, These polish peolple were running away from Siberian Labour Camps. About 5000 Polish people, lived in Valivade Camp from 1943 to 1948.
Village Valivade is in the city of Kolhapur,Maharashtra state.
During the year 1998 ,The grateful Polish people installed an obelisk in the Mahavir Garden,Kolhapur. Eagle is there at the top of this memorial pillar.
There is the map of Valivade Camp, showing the arrangements of Barracks and facilities provided.The pillar has description written in three languages,Polish language, English and Marathi. Marathi language is the mother tounge of Kolhapuri people and whole Maharashtra State.
Though the climate conditions were totally different here in Valivade, Kolhapur, the poles adjusted to the warm climate. The Valivade Camp was established near the banks of Panchaganga River, People of Kolhapur offered great hospitality and care to them. There is a memorial pillar located in Valivade at the camp site. This memorial pillar was installed in the memory of the Polish families, who stayed here. Poland''s Deputy Foreign Minister Marcin Przydacz unveiled the pillar on 14 September 2019.Valivade is about 8 kilometers from Kolhapur city. Still few Polish visit this place every year. This place was a home away from home.
The government offered many of these barracks as residences to the Sindhi population that crossed over to India during Partition,
And now, Many built more modern houses and bungalows at the site of the barracks. Though the old Barracks and buildings are not there, there are sweet memories of childhood, happiness and joy.
The road to India became the start of a new life for thousands of Polish.
Village Valivade means a lot to many......freedom....peace....Joy.....a Home away from home.
